Confined Spaces
Working in confined spaces is hazardous. Figures from the HSE indicate that each year, 15 people are killed during work in such spaces. This is 5% of the total number of deaths at work. Although accidents in confined spaces are uncommon, when they do occur, they are more often fatal.
Confined Space is 'any place, including any chamber, tank, vat, silo, pit, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well or other similar space in which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, there arises a reasonably foreseeable specified risk'. (Source: Confined Spaces Regulations 1997).
